The festival originated as the National Jazz Festival which was arranged by Harold Pendleton in 1961. This festival was actually influenced by those held in the United States of America. The festival changed many names over a decade, and even moved around and changed venues till it was finally held in Reading in 1971 and hasn’t changed places since. It used to play a lot of rock, blues and heavy metal in the 70s and then in the late ‘70s started having punk rock bands as well.
The festival format is to have lesser known acts on the first day and have better known acts perform on the last two days. It shares all its performers with the Leeds Festival which is held on the same dates. In 1984 the local council banned the festival and reclaimed the site it was held on. They refused to allow the festival to be held anywhere else by refusing a license. This and the next year, 1985, were the only years when the festival was not held. In 1986, the local council changed and the ban was overturned.
